Although experts recommend reducing the intake of salt, small amounts of salt relieve headache, strengthen immunity, boost energy, balance serotonin and electrolyte level in the body, and provide many other benefits.
You should be careful about the amount of salt and sugar you eat, because of their potential to harm your health, but this sure does not mean that they both do not provide certain health benefits.
According to Matt Stone, an American scientific researcher and author of several books about nutrition and metabolism, the combination of sugar and salt has great effect on your health.
Namely, proper amounts of this combination can provide insomniacs something they desperately need, but cannot get – a good sleep. How is this possible?
Sugar and salt act as “batteries” for your cells: glucose provides direct fuel supply to the mitochondria, and the balance of sodium in the interstitial fluid provides proper cellular respiration and production of energy.
Both foods are strong nutritious tools that will help you manage stress – sugar signals your body to stop the production of stress hormones that affect your metabolism and keep you awake at night. Salt is also important for the maintenance of the homeostatic conditions in which adrenaline does not go out of control.
So, if you can remember that using these nutrients can help you relieve stress, then you should not consider them as unhealthy or terrifying.
And no, sugar does not cause hyperactivity. That is a real myth. When used in this way, as a therapeutic remedy, it has the opposite effect.
So, if you often wake up between 2 and 4 am, feeling how the adrenalin circulates through your body and keeps you awake, the combination of sugar and salt can be the real solution for you.
This salty-sweet combination will provide a balance and optimal function of the stress hormone, explains Matt Stone.
How to make it?
According to Matt Stone, you should use one part of salt and 5 parts of sugar.
For optimal results, use unrefined sea or Himalayan salt and high quality raw brown muscovado or rapaadura sugar. If you do not have any of these, feel free to use regular salt and sugar.
Combine 5 tablespoons of sugar and a tablespoon of salt. Keep the mixture in a jar. You can use this “powder” for a long time.
Use it before you go to bed or when you wake up during the night. Shake the jar, and using a teaspoon or your fingers take a pinch of the mixture and put it under your tongue. Let it melt.
